Teaching guide

What children will practise

Convert lengths between metres and centimetres and masses between kilograms and grams, multiplying or dividing by 100 or 1,000 using the facts box.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 20 points - A facts box: 1 metre = 100 centimetres and 1 kilogram = 1,000 grams, with the example 3 metres = 3 x 100 = 300 centimetres - Questions 1-5 are lengths, e.g. 7 metres = 700 centimetres, and back again, 900 centimetres = 9 metres - Questions 6-10 are masses, e.g. 4 kilograms = 4,000 grams and 3,000 grams = 3 kilograms - Each question has a working line; the separate answer key shows the multiplication or division for every item

How to use it in class

Use after children have measured with metres and centimetres and weighed with kilograms and grams. Allow about 15-20 minutes. - Before each item, have children decide the direction: big unit to small unit means multiply, small to big means divide - Follow up by measuring a desk or weighing a school bag and recording it in both units

Common sticking points

- Using 100 for kilograms and grams, or 1,000 for metres and centimetres - In Q4-5 and Q9-10, which go from the smaller unit to the larger, multiplying instead of dividing, e.g. getting 90,000 instead of 9 - Writing too few or too many zeros, e.g. 2 kilograms as 200 grams
