Add and subtract two-digit numbers within 100 using mental strategies (bridge through ten, add ten and give one back, split the number being subtracted into tens and ones, count on in jumps), and solve multi-step problems, including picking out the information needed and writing number sentences.
20 slides set on a film set, each with boxes to fill in - Slides 1-6, addition strategies: split 20 stars into two boxes two ways, move 3 stars from a box of 18 to a box of 12 and check the total stays the same, 27 + 8 by making 30 first, 36 + 9 by adding 10 and giving 1 back, add three piles of 18, 12 and 7, and use 32 + 20 = 52 to find 32 + 21 and 32 + 19 - Slides 7-13, subtraction strategies and relationships: 58 - 23 split into 20 and 3, 43 - 7 by going down to 40 first, 62 script cards with 20 taken for a team that needs 19, so one goes back, count on from 47 to 63 (+3 +10 +3), does the difference between 42 and 18 change when both get 2 more, 26 + 14 = 33 + ?, and 16 hats borrowed then returned - Slides 14-18, word problems: 72 seats with 26 and 18 booked, extra information (6 cameras that do not matter), missing information (more flags but no number), 52 - 17 + 9, and whether 43 + 18 envelopes are enough for 70 guests - Slides 19-20: choose 3 scene cards that make 60 seconds in two different ways, and make up a story that ends with 50 - There are no answer slides
Suits Year 2 once children can add and subtract two-digit numbers in columns. Use three lessons of about 30-35 minutes (slides 1-6, 7-13, 14-20). - On every slide have partners explain their method to each other before writing the answer, because the aim is the mental strategy, not just the result; use cubes or tens rods alongside slides 3, 4 and 8 - On slides 15-16 pause so children underline the information they need and say what is missing, then follow up with the multi-step word problems worksheet or the finding the missing number worksheet
- With add ten and give one back (slide 4), forgetting to give the 1 back or adjusting the wrong way, giving 46 or 47 instead of 45 - Splitting 23 into 20 and 3, subtracting the 20 and then adding the 3 back instead of subtracting it (slide 7) - Using every number in the problem, such as subtracting the 6 cameras too (slide 15) - Thinking the difference must grow when both teams get 2 more (slide 11), or reading = as 'write the answer' and putting 40 in 26 + 14 = 33 + ? (slide 12)
