Teaching guide

What children will practise

Find the missing number in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division number sentences, then check by putting the answer back into the sentence.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 20 points - Example: □ + 4 = 9, so □ = 5 - 3 addition items, e.g. 18 + □ = 30, and 3 subtraction items, e.g. □ - 9 = 16 and 90 - □ = 35 - 2 multiplication items (□ x 4 = 28, 8 x □ = 56) and 2 division items (□ ÷ 5 = 9, 72 ÷ □ = 8) - Every item has a "check" line for writing the completed sentence; the separate answer key shows the answer and the check for each

How to use it in class

Use near the end of a unit once children understand how addition links to subtraction and multiplication to division. Allow about 20 minutes. - Work Q3 and Q4 on the board first, so children see that a box in a different position needs a different step - Follow up by having children write two missing-box puzzles of their own and swap with a partner to solve and check

Common sticking points

- In Q3 (□ - 9 = 16), working out 16 - 9 = 7 instead of adding to get 25 - In Q9 (□ ÷ 5 = 9), trying to divide again instead of multiplying 5 x 9 = 45 - Filling the box but skipping the check line, so an error goes unnoticed
