Teaching guide

What children will practise

Read two-step word problems, write one number sentence for each step and give the answer with the correct unit.

What's in the worksheet

5 questions, 20 points - Example: 3 bags of 4 balloons plus 2 more (3 x 4 = 12, then 12 + 2 = 14 balloons) - Two multiply-then-add problems: 4 bags of 6 oranges plus 5 more (29 oranges) and 6 packs of 7 bottles plus 10 more (52 bottles) - One multiply-then-subtract problem: 5 sheets of 8 stickers with 9 given away (31 stickers) - One add-then-subtract and one subtract-twice problem: books 35 + 28 - 16 (47) and pencils 42 - 15 - 12 (15) - Each item has lines for step 1, step 2 and the answer; a separate answer key is included

How to use it in class

Use once children are confident with one-step problems and know the 4 to 8 times tables. Allow about 20-25 minutes. - Have children underline the action words, such as "each bag", "bought more" and "gave away", before writing step 1 - Follow up by changing the numbers in Q3 or Q4 and asking a partner to solve it and explain why they chose each operation

Common sticking points

- In Q1, going by the picture, which shows only 3 bags, and working out 3 x 6 instead of 4 x 6 - In Q4, adding 15 and 12 and answering 27 without taking it away from 42 - Stopping after step 1 and giving that as the answer - Writing the number without its unit, such as oranges, books or stickers
