Teaching guide

What children will practise

Match eight numbers between 1 and 20 to words in a word bank, then read a word and pick its number from look-alike options such as 12, 2 and 20.

What's in the worksheet

12 questions, 20 points - Word bank A-H: twelve, three, twenty, seven, one, fifteen, ten and five - Part A: write the word's letter beside 10, 1, 15, 5, 20, 7, 3 and 12 (8 items, 16 points) - Part B: read a word and circle its number (4 points): twelve (12/2/20), seven (17/7/11), twenty (2/12/20) and fifteen (50/15/5) - A separate answer key is included

How to use it in class

Use as the first sheet on 1-20, when children are just starting to read number words. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, hold up number cards one at a time and have children find the word and call out its letter A-H - In Part B, ask children to explain why twelve is not 2 or 20, so they notice how -teen, -ty and single digits differ

Common sticking points

- Part B uses the same options, 2, 12 and 20, for both twelve and twenty, so children who only notice the tw- start swap them - For fifteen the distractors are 50 and 5, catching children who confuse fifteen with fifty - For seven the distractor 17 catches children thinking of seventeen - The word bank is not in number order, and some children simply write A, B, C down the Part A boxes
