What children will practise

Choose the sentence with the regular -ed past form, such as danced, watched or visited, to go with a past time phrase, rather than the present -s form.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 20 points (Part A, 2 points each) - Sentences a/b differ only in the verb ending, e.g. They watch TV last night. / They watched TV last night. - Ten verbs: play, dance, watch, cook, jump, clean, visit, wash, paint and climb - Spellings include plain -ed (played, cleaned) and -d only (danced) - A separate answer key writes the correct sentence under each picture

How to use it in class

Use as the first sheet of the past simple unit, before the irregular verbs. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, practise the three -ed sounds with verbs from the sheet: /t/ watched, cooked; /d/ played, cleaned; /id/ visited, painted - After marking, children turn the sheet over and retell each picture in the past from memory before moving on to the fill-in sheet

Common sticking points

- Items 5, 8 and 10 have no time phrase, so the present (The dog jumps over the fence.) is also grammatical; a child choosing it is not simply wrong - Choosing the present because the picture shows an action in progress, e.g. the car being washed in item 8 - Reading only the start of each option, since a and b are identical up to the verb ending - The answers alternate b, a, b, a throughout, so children may follow the pattern
