What children will practise

Complete Ben's gapped introduction email, then plan a greeting, your name, your favourite subject and a closing, and write your own reply.

What's in the worksheet

A two-step writing task, 20 points (no per-part marks) - Step 1, Read the email: a message to Mia, subject My new school, with four gaps: age, home town, favourite subject and the reason after because - Step 2, Write your reply: four planning boxes, Greeting (Hi ___,), Your name, Your favourite subject and Closing (Best wishes, ___), plus a five-line email box - Word bank: English, science, art, music, fun, interesting, friendly, please write back - A separate model answer page (10, Bangkok, science, it is fun) with a reply from Lily

How to use it in class

Use as the first email-writing task, after teaching the parts of an email: To, Subject, greeting and closing. Allow about 20-25 minutes. - Read Ben's email together first and point out that the Step 1 gaps (Ben's age and town) have no single right answer - When the replies are done, children swap with a partner and write back two or three lines, before moving on to the five-part planning sheet

Common sticking points

- In the Step 2 Greeting box children may write Hi Mia from the email header, though the reply goes to Ben (the model itself puts Mia in the box but Hi Ben in the reply) - Leaving out the comma after the greeting and closing: Hi Ben / Best wishes Lily - Writing an incomplete reason after because, e.g. because fun instead of because it is fun - Running the reply on as one block, without putting the greeting and closing on their own lines
