Curriculum indicators practised
Before you begin
Read what a teacher or classmate says, or a short classroom situation, and choose the most fitting polite reply, such as Here you are., You're welcome., I am sorry. or Yes, please.
10 questions, 20 points - Seven items quote a teacher or friend, e.g. Please pass the crayons. and Thank you for the sticker.; three describe a situation, e.g. You accidentally step on a friend's foot. - Three options each, drawn from the same small set: Okay., Good morning., Thank you., You're welcome. - Answers: Here you are. (items 1, 4), You're welcome. (2, 8), Okay. (5, 10), plus I am sorry., Thank you., Yes, please. and May I have some water, please? - A Let's Reflect box with three faces for self-assessment, and a separate answer key
Use early in the year when teaching classroom politeness. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Before starting, act it out with one child: hand over a crayon saying Here you are. and wait for Thank you., so the class sees which phrase goes with giving and which with receiving - After marking, pairs act out items 1-10 with real classroom objects, then colour a face in the Let's Reflect box
- In item 4, May I use your pencil?, children often choose Yes, please., which answers an offer, not a request to borrow - In item 6, where a classmate gives you a book, children may pick Here you are. instead of Thank you., unsure who is giving to whom - In item 7, Would you like some help?, Thank you. is tempting and not really wrong, but Yes, please. fits better - In items 2 and 8 children may answer a thank-you with Okay. instead of You're welcome.
