Experiments and observation

An AR classroom game for Grade 3. Learners can aim with their hands at the camera or play by tapping the screen.

This set has 6 questions in an interactive multiple choice activity.

A look before you play

Sample questions

A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.

  1. What does good observation rely on?

    • the senses and written records
    • listening to what others tell you
    • only the eyes, then remembering it
    Read the explanation

Use several senses and record what you actually see.

  2. What is the independent variable in an experiment?

    • what must stay the same
    • what we change
    • what we measure
    Read the explanation

The independent variable is what you deliberately change to see the effect.

  3. What is the dependent variable?

    • what you change
    • something unrelated
    • what you measure
    Read the explanation

The dependent variable is the result you measure.

What children will practise

Science process skills: observing with the senses and recording, independent and dependent variables, repeating an experiment, and recording results honestly. These skills run through every unit and have no single content indicator; variables are usually taught properly around Grade 5, so treat them here as a first introduction.

What's in the worksheet

6 questions, multiple choice with three options each - Good observation relies on the senses and written records - The independent variable is what we change; the dependent variable is what we measure - Repeat an experiment to reduce errors and confirm the result - If the result is unexpected, record it honestly and find the cause (distractor: change the numbers)

How to use it in class

Use it before an experiment that needs recording, such as growing beans with different amounts of water, about 5-6 minutes, solo. After questions 2 and 3, write the real experiment on the board and have children point to the independent and dependent variables. Questions 5 and 6 open a short talk about honesty in science. You can link it to a class and record it in the gradebook.

Common sticking points

- Questions 2 and 3: swapping independent and dependent variables, as the Thai names are similar and new. Give a memory hook: ต้น is the cause we change, ตาม is the result that follows. - Question 4: choosing pick the best-looking result, thinking repetition is for finding a good result. Stress that every result is used. - Question 1: choosing only the eyes, then remember it, trusting memory. Have everyone observe one object and compare what each remembers.
