Before you begin
Read eight English colour words and match them to paint splashes, then apply the words to familiar objects such as an apple, the sun, a leaf and a balloon.
12 questions, 20 points - Word bank A-H: purple, blue, yellow, red, black, green, orange and white - Part A: write the letter of the word next to each of 8 paint splashes (16 points), in the order green, red, white, orange, blue, black, yellow, purple - Part B: choose the colour of a picture from three words (4 points): apple (blue/red/green), sun (yellow/purple/black), leaf (orange/blue/green) and balloon (white/blue/red) - A separate answer key is included
Use early in a colours unit, once children can hear and say the colour names. Allow about 10 minutes. - Print in colour; in black and white the splashes cannot be told apart - After marking, play Touch something red!: children find and touch an object of the colour called out and name it
- Splash 3 is white with only an outline, so children may think it was left uncoloured and not answer white - Mixing up purple and blue, which Thai learners often blur - Confusing orange with yellow when the orange splash prints pale - In Part B the balloon offers red and white, common balloon colours, so children who do not look at the picture may guess from habit
