Teaching guide

What children will practise

Match seven foods and three drinks to a lettered word bank A-J, telling apart the glasses of milk, juice and water.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 20 points - Word bank A-J: soup, bread, water, egg, pizza, milk, cake, rice, juice, burger - Write the letter beside 10 pictures: pizza, a glass of milk, vegetable soup with tofu, a burger, strawberry cake, a loaf of bread, orange juice, a bowl of rice, a glass of water and a fried egg - Three drinks (items 2, 7 and 9) are in identical glasses and differ only by colour - Key reads E F A J G B I H C D

How to use it in class

Use at the start of a food unit, as the first sheet before children write the words themselves. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, have children sort the pictures aloud into things we eat and things we drink - After marking, role-play ordering with Can I have some ..., please? using words from the bank

Common sticking points

- Swapping milk (item 2) and water (item 9), which are drawn in the same glass - Item 10 is a fried egg, so some children look for fried egg, which is not in the bank - Swapping bread (item 6) and cake (item 5), both baked goods - Writing the letter I like the number 1 or a lower-case l, which makes item 7 hard to mark
