What children will practise

Use the NOW, EVERY DAY or day-of-the-week sign in each picture, plus the time words in the sentence, to decide between a Present Simple and a Present Continuous sentence.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 2 points each, 20 points in total - Each picture carries a time sign: NOW (items 2, 4, 6, 8, 10), MONDAY, EVERY DAY, SUNDAY or a night sky - The options differ only in the verb form, e.g. a. Dad drives to work every day. / b. Dad is driving to work every day. - Five answers are Present Simple (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) and five Present Continuous (2, 4, 6, 8, 10) - A separate answer key marks the correct sentence in red

How to use it in class

Use once both tenses have been taught separately and you are starting to compare them. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Before starting, draw a two-column table on the board, now in one column and every day, on Sundays, at night in the other, and ask children for more time words - After marking, show children that the answers alternate a, b, a, b, then have them write their own pair, e.g. I play football every Monday. / I am playing football now.

Common sticking points

- Items 1, 5 and 9: choosing the continuous sentence because the picture shows the action happening, ignoring the MONDAY or EVERY DAY sign - Item 3: choosing The dog is sleeping at night. because the dog is asleep in the picture - Items 2, 4 and 10: accepting She drinks milk now. just because now is in it - Guessing from the alternating a/b pattern without reading
