Before you begin

Teaching guide

What children will practise

Judge from pictures whether behaviour during an experiment is safe or unsafe, as a way of learning science-room safety rules.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 10 points - Look at each picture and circle safe / unsafe - Safe: wearing goggles, tying hair back, washing hands, reading the experiment guide and asking the teacher - Unsafe: tasting from a test tube, running past a 'walk, don't run' sign, pouring liquids together without goggles, breathing in fumes from a heated tube and pouring chemical waste down the sink - The answer key marks the correct option for every item

How to use it in class

Use before the first practical of the term, alongside setting the science-room rules. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - After marking, turn each unsafe picture into a short class rule, such as never taste anything, and display them - Have children act out the safe items, tying hair back and putting goggles on, before a real experiment

Common sticking points

- Item 4 (tying hair back) may not look like a safety action; explain that loose hair can catch a flame or dip into chemicals - Item 5 (pouring) is often marked safe because pouring looks ordinary; point out there are no goggles and the child is mixing on their own - Item 10: thinking the sink is fine because water is running, although the picture shows a sign forbidding chemicals in the sink
