What children will practise

Add up the prices of items bought, then find the change from the banknote paid using amount paid - total.

What's in the worksheet

5 questions with 10 answer blanks, 20 points - An unscored example: pencil 10 baht + eraser 5 baht, pay 20, change 5 baht - One item paid with a 20-baht note, two with 50-baht notes and two with 100-baht notes, e.g. orange juice 18 + cookie 12, pay 50, change 20 baht - In Q1 (pencil 12 + eraser 8, pay 20) the change is 0, and Q3 has a single item, a 35-baht book - Each item asks for the total and the change; a separate answer key is included

How to use it in class

Use once children know the 20, 50 and 100-baht notes and can subtract two-digit numbers. Allow about 15-20 minutes. - Do Q1 together and ask why there is no change - Follow up with a pretend classroom shop where children take turns as the seller giving the right change

Common sticking points

- In Q1 the change is 0, so children leave it blank or copy the total again - Q3 has only one item, and some children try to add another number, such as 35 + 50 - Slipping on subtraction with exchange, e.g. 100 - 70 or 50 - 35 - Writing the total in the change line, or swapping the two lines
