A look before you play
A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.
"Sixteen" is simply "six" plus "teen".
"Seventeen" is "seven" plus "teen".
"Twenty" ends in "ty", not "teen".
Before you play
Read and spell number words 15 to 20, tell -teen from -ty (sixteen vs sixty) and watch the tricky spelling of eighteen (indicator ต 1.1 ป.2/2).
6 questions, multiple choice; the distractors are -ty words and misspellings - 16: sixteen (distractor sixty) - 20: twenty (distractor twoty) - ten + five = ? fifteen - 18: eighteen (distractor eightteen)
Play at the start of class after counting to 20 together, about 4 minutes, in teams that say the number aloud before tapping. - Before item 18, write eight + teen on the board and rub out one t so they see only one remains - If -teen vs -ty goes wrong, children hold up one finger for teen and a whole hand for ty - Play it linked to your class so the scores go into the gradebook
- 18 (Q6): choosing eightteen, thinking eight + teen keeps both t's - 16 and 19: choosing sixty or ninety because the endings sound alike, especially for weaker readers - 20: choosing twoty by analogy with six to sixteen. Explain twenty must simply be learned
