Sample questions

  1. I ___ to school yesterday.

    • went
    • go
    • goes
    Read the explanation

"Yesterday" marks the past, and the past of "go" is "went".

  2. She ___ a book last night.

    • reading
    • read
    • reads
    Read the explanation

The past of "read" is spelt the same but said differently.

  3. They ___ football last Sunday.

    • playing
    • play
    • played

"Play" is a regular verb, so it adds "ed".

What children will practise

Use the first past simple forms (went, read, played and was/were) and recognise past time words yesterday, last night and last week (indicator ต 1.2 ป.4/1).

What's in the worksheet

6 questions, multiple choice with 3 options - I ___ to school yesterday. Answer: went - She ___ a book last night. Answer: read - We ___ happy yesterday. Answer: were - He ___ at home last week. Answer: was

How to use it in class

Use as the first game after teaching the past simple, about 5 minutes, whole class; children call out the answer before tapping. - For read, say both pronunciations (reed and red) to show the spelling stays the same - Afterwards, each child says one sentence about yesterday: Yesterday I ... - Play it linked to your class so scores go into the gradebook

Common sticking points

- She ___ a book last night (Q2): choosing reads, because past read looks like the present, so children doubt it - We ___ happy yesterday (Q4): choosing was, knowing it is past but not separating was from were - I ___ to school yesterday (Q1): choosing go by children who do not know went yet
