Game teaching guide

What children will practise

Practise telling present from past by the time word and the verb form: I am writing now. versus I wrote it yesterday., time words, -ed verbs versus irregular ones, and words that describe a verb versus a noun.

What's in the worksheet

4 sorting questions - She is cooking. versus She cooked last night. - every day and usually go with the present; yesterday and last night with the past - walk and play add -ed; go and eat change shape - quickly and slowly describe verbs; beautiful and happy describe nouns

How to use it in class

Use as a mid-lesson change of pace after the past tense, 5 minutes in team mode. - For item 2, ask pupils for more time words to sort, such as last week and now - For item 3, chant walked, played, went, ate - If item 4 goes wrong, note that most -ly words describe verbs Play it linked to a class and the results go into the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Item 1: putting She is cooking. under already over since it has no time word; look at is and -ing - Item 2: putting usually with the past because they don't see it as a frequency word - Item 4: putting happy under describes a verb, thinking it tells how the doer feels
