Game teaching guide

What children will practise

Practise common classroom and movement verbs (stand up, sit down, run, jump), match verbs to the body part used, and pair opposite verbs (open-close, go-come).

What's in the worksheet

4 matching rounds of 4 pairs each - stand up with its Thai meaning, listen with its meaning - jump and swim with their meanings - see with eyes, write with hands - Opposites: give with take, start with stop

How to use it in class

Use after a game of Simon says, to check children know what the verbs mean; about 4-5 minutes. - Play in teams and have the team act each word before matching - In round 3, have children point to their own body part while saying the verb - If round 4 goes badly, act out the opposites, e.g. opening and closing a door, giving and taking an object - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Round 1: look and listen are swapped, both starting with l and often heard together - Round 2: run and walk get swapped - Round 4: go/come and give/take involve direction, which Grade 1 may not yet separate
