Game teaching guide

What children will practise

Practise first describing words (big/small, hot/cold) and use known vocabulary to sort things that are big or small, hot or cold, light or dark colours, and number words versus colour words.

What's in the worksheet

4 sorting rounds, dragging 4 cards into 2 groups - Big or small: elephant, ant, bus, pencil - Hot or cold: fire, ice, sun, snow - Light or dark colour: white, black, pink, brown - Says how many or a colour: three, red, seven, blue

How to use it in class

Use after teaching big, small, hot and cold with gestures; about 4 minutes. - Play in teams and read every card aloud before it is dragged - In round 1, have children stretch their arms (big) or pinch their fingers (small) for each word - If snow goes wrong in round 2, show a picture, since Thai children rarely see real snow - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Round 2: snow is unfamiliar to Thai children and may be misplaced - Round 1: ant may not be known, as it is not common Grade 1 vocabulary - Round 3: pink and brown cause hesitation, since lightness depends on the shade a child imagines
