Game teaching guide

What children will practise

Practise first opposites (big-small, happy-sad, fast-slow, in-out) and match boy, girl, man and woman to their Thai meanings.

What's in the worksheet

4 matching rounds of 4 pairs each - big with small, long with short, up with down - happy with sad, day with night, yes with no - fast with slow, new with old, in with out - boy, girl, man and woman with their meanings

How to use it in class

Use after teaching opposites with gestures or picture cards; about 4-5 minutes. - Play in teams and have them act both words before matching, e.g. running fast and walking slowly - For round 3, hold up something new and something old for new/old - For round 4, have children point to a boy, a girl and the teacher to separate boy from man - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Round 4: boy/man and girl/woman get swapped, as everyday Thai uses ผู้ชาย and ผู้หญิง for both - Round 3: new/old may go wrong because children know old as elderly rather than worn - Round 1: long/short may be muddled with up/down
