What children will practise

Practise classroom words (pencil, pen, book, desk, ruler, teacher, student), sort them by use and size, and sort the vowel letters A and E from consonants.

What's in the worksheet

4 sorting rounds, dragging 4 cards into 2 groups - For writing or reading: pencil, book, pen, story - Fits in a bag or stays in the classroom: eraser, desk, ruler, window - Person or object: teacher, chair, student, bag - Vowel or consonant: A, B, E, K

How to use it in class

Use after teaching classroom words with real objects; about 4 minutes. - Play as a class on the projector; for every card dragged, have children point to the real thing in the room - Chant A E I O U before round 4 - In round 3, have children point to the teacher and a classmate, then to a chair and a bag - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Round 4: vowels and consonants in English are new; children may think in Thai terms, where vowels have separate symbols - Round 1: story is not a physical object, so children may not know where it goes - Round 2: eraser and ruler are long words children may not yet read
