What children will practise

Practise counting forwards from five to eight and backwards from ten to seven in English, and order the middle letters I to P.

What's in the worksheet

4 ordering rounds of 4 cards - five, six, seven, eight - Counting down: ten, nine, eight, seven - I, J, K, L - M, N, O, P

How to use it in class

Use as a short lesson warm-up; about 3 minutes. - Play as a class on the projector and count aloud together - Warn before round 2 that it counts down; try a rocket countdown first - For rounds 3 and 4, sing the middle of the ABC song - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Round 2: children order smallest first out of habit, since the other rounds go forwards - Round 1: six and seven both start with s and may be swapped - Round 4: M and N look alike and may be swapped
