Game teaching guide

What children will practise

Sort household things by room (kitchen or bedroom) and review other words by sorting: pets versus wild animals, things in the sky versus on the ground, and one- versus two-syllable words.

What's in the worksheet

4 sorting rounds, dragging 4 cards into 2 groups - Kitchen or bedroom: pot, bed, plate, pillow - Pet or wild animal: dog, lion, cat, tiger - In the sky or on the ground: sun, tree, moon, flower - One or two syllables: cat, rabbit, dog, monkey

How to use it in class

Use after teaching rooms in the house with a house picture; about 4 minutes. - Play in teams; in round 1 have teams say what each thing is used for - In round 4, clap the syllables: cat (one clap), rab-bit (two claps) - Tell children before rounds 2-4 that they review other topics, not rooms - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Round 4: counting English syllables is new; children may count letters and get monkey and rabbit right or wrong by chance - Round 1: pot and pillow both start with p, and pot is unfamiliar - Round 3: tree may go under the sky because trees are tall
