Game teaching guide

What children will practise

Sort singular and plural nouns (including child and children), verb to be vs ordinary verbs, There is vs There are by number, and jobs vs places.

What's in the worksheet

4 questions, sorting into 2 groups - book, child are singular; books, children are plural - is, are are verb to be; run, eat are ordinary verbs - a cat, one book take There is; three cats, many books take There are - doctor, teacher are jobs; hospital, school are places

How to use it in class

Use after teaching singular/plural and There is/are, about 5 minutes, solo, to see each child's understanding. - After Q3, read the whole sentence aloud: There are three cats. - If verb to be goes badly, say you cannot act out is, am or are, but you can act out run and eat - Play it linked to your class so scores go into the gradebook

Common sticking points

- child and children (Q1): children look for a final s and are thrown by children; the game's own explanation says to look for the s. Teach this irregular plural first - is and are (Q2): dragged to ordinary verbs because they have been called verbs - many books (Q3): hesitation because there is no number. Look at the s on books
