What children will practise

Practise telling apart words used often in conversation (ต 1.2 ป.5/1): must and have to for necessity, can and could for ability, should for advice, must not for rules, plus reason versus contrast linking words.

What's in the worksheet

4 sorting questions - must and have to versus can and could - because and since give a reason; but and however argue against - You should rest. versus You must not smoke. - always and usually are often; never and rarely are seldom

How to use it in class

Use after a lesson on school rules or health advice, 5-6 minutes, in team mode so teams agree before dragging. - After item 3, have pupils write one class rule with must not and one tip with should - If the linking words go wrong, finish I stayed home because ... and I was sick, but ... together Play it linked to a class and the results go into the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Putting since with contrast because pupils know it as ตั้งแต่ (since Monday); give since it was raining - Putting could under necessity because they know could from polite requests; say that here it is the past of can - In item 4, hesitating over never in the seldom group, since never means not at all
