Let English writing begin with a model pupils can use

Writing activities help pupils move from words and phrases to sentences, short messages, and responses to a situation. Choose them after pupils have the vocabulary and pattern they need, so writing communicates an idea instead of becoming copying alone.

  • Grades 1 to 3: let pupils draw on picture words or a word bank before writing a short sentence.
  • Grades 4 to 6: show one model, then invite pupils to change the details into something of their own.
  • Review: look at meaning as well as form, and choose one or two points to improve at a time.
